Daily itinerary

Day 1: Travel day and arrival in Portugal (Friday, March 27th)

Your trip begins with a regularly scheduled direct flight from Frankfurt Hahn to Porto in Portugal.

Flight times:
Frankfurt Hahn – Porto 07:30am – 09:15am

Welcome to Portugal! We’ll transfer to Porto’s charming Old Town for a guided tour:

  • Wander through the tiny riverside lanes of the Ribeira district and let your eyes dance across its candy-colored buildings.
  • Pass citywide icons—such as the Baroque-style Clerigos Tower, the Gothic Sao Francisco Church, and the double-decker Dom Luís I Bridge—as you wind along the Douro River to the mouth of the Atlantic.

Then, check in to your 4-star hotel in the historic center and enjoy a free evening or add an excursion:

Guided Optional Excursion – Duoro River Sunset Cruise (€25 per adult)
Float along the beautiful Douro, the Iberian Peninsula’s third-longest river. Take in scenes of Porto’s vibrant waterfront and the historic city of Vila Nova de Gaia, home to the region’s centuries-old Port wine warehouses. As you cruise, you’ll drift under five of the river’s most iconic old-world bridges, passing colorful hillside villas and traditional rabelos (flat-bottomed boats) along the way.

Day 2: Free day in Porto (Saturday, March 28th)

Use your free day in Porto to recharge with fresh produce and local snacks from Bolhao Market—it’s been serving locals since 1914. You can also head to the Crystal Palace Gardens for a scenic (and fragrant) vantage point overlooking the city and Douro River.

Prefer to leave the planning to us? Join our optional excursion to the medieval city center of Guimaraes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Guided Optional Excursion – A Day in Guimarães & Braga
Spend the day diving into Portuguese history as you explore Guimarães, a UNESCO-recognized city. Begin with a local guide, visiting Largo da Oliveira and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação before going inside the Paço dos Duques de Bragança. Afterward, enjoy free time for lunch, then continue to your next stop—Braga. Tour its Old Town, passing the Praça da República, Palácio do Raio, and Sé de Braga. Then, head just outside the city to enter the UNESCO-listed Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a hilltop shrine that ranks as one of the country’s most iconic pilgrimage sites. You’ll have the option to climb the 640 stairs or ride the funicular to the sanctuary.

Day 3: Douro Valley & wine tasting (Sunday, March 29th)

After an included breakfast buffet, we’ll travel through rolling hills and small villages as we make our way to the Douro Valley, making stops as we go. The vineyards terraced into this fertile region produce Portugal’s luscious Port wines and other varietals. In other words: You’re in for a treat.

  • Visit the 18th-century Casa de Mateus, considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Portugal.
  • Stop at a local restaurant for lunch featuring regional food and wine (own expense)
  • Visit a winery to sample three varietals from some of Portugal’s most prestigious grape-growing areas.

Continue to your hotel in Porto and enjoy a free evening to relax.

Day 4: Aveiro & Costa Nova (Monday, March 30th)

Today, we’ll leave Porto for a half-day trip to discover the charming canals of Aveiro, with an expert guide leading the way:

  • Cruise along Aveiro’s channels in a unique “Moliceiro” boat (if option selected)
  • Learn about the city’s culture and its traditional connections with water
  • Admire the brightly colored houses on a walk through Costa Nova
  • Know all about cultural and historical significance of various sites in the city

Day 5: Porto & Flight Home (Tuesday, March 31st)

Today continue to discover Porto at your own pace before checking out from hotel and transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

Flight times:
Porto – Frankfurt Hahn 18:30 – 22:05

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING PASSPORTS

A valid tourist passport is required for this trip. Please make sure that you are traveling with the appropriate passport.

Meeting point for the start of the trip

Your trip starts and finishes at Frankfurt (Hahn) Airport.

Passport and Visa Requirements
A tourist passport is required for all trips outside of Germany.

Important passport rules are as follows:
If you have a passport with a SOFA stamp on any page (a “No-Fee” passport), you are provided permission to reside in Germany, NOT to travel outside of Germany. You have to have a tourist passport in addition to the SOFA/”No-Fee” passport to travel outside of Germany. You cannot travel with a RED Official passport as that is used only for the purpose of a mission or deployment. If you have a passport with a detachable SOFA card clipped inside, it is acceptable to travel with as that was issued originally as a tourist passport. If you are not sure: a tourist passport will be BLUE and will be valid for 10 years for adults. It cannot contain a SOFA stamp on any page or it is not acceptable. A child’s tourist passport (under 15 years of age) is valid for 5 years, but will not have a SOFA stamp in it anywhere. All of this information has been verified to be correct with the Grafenwoehr Passport Office.

Baggage Allowance
· One check-in bag: max weight up to 10kg (22lb).
· One small personal carry-on item: max size 25cm H (10”) x 33cm W (13”) x 20cm D(8”).

Clothing & Packing
We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. For sightseeing, we suggest bringing a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers, as well as a lightweight jacket or rainwear. If you’re planning a visit to a high-end restaurant or performance, you may also want to bring dressier attire. Also, please be respectful and avoid showing bare legs or shoulders when visiting churches or other religious sites (entrance may be denied on this basis).

Hotels on Tour

  • Explore Europe handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
  • Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S.

Health
There are no major health risks associated with traveling to Portugal. However, it’s always advisable to check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates.

Cuisine
Portuguese food is fresh, hearty, and delicious. Try seafood stew cooked in a cataplana, a shell-shaped copper pan, or the national dish, bacalhau (salted cod). A couvert, or simple plate of bread, butter, and olives, is often served when you sit down to a meal—while it is free in many restaurants, some will add a charge to your bill for it.

Transportation
Round-trip flights arrive in and depart from Porto. Included transportation is by private bus in Portugal. Most of the destinations are easily walkable.

Electricity
Portugal operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, F, or L plugs with two or three small, round pins. We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter.

Currency
The euro is the currency you’ll be using on your trip. You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees. We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

We recommend you get travel insurance to reimburse you for unforeseen trip cancellation. Please follow this link to get a quote through Travel Insured.
